Edmund Lockwood1

     Edmund was born in Combs, County Suffolk, England. He was christened there on 15 January 1598/99 in St. Mary's Church. He was the son of Edmund Lockwood and Ales Cowper. He was first married in England, her name is unknown. Edmund had a son Edmund [1625] [m. 1/07/1655/56 Hannah Scott d/o Thomas Scott]. Edmund and his family immigrated to New England in 1630, settling in Newtown [Cambridge] where he was admitted as a freeman 18 May 1631. Edmund and Elizabeth had a son John. Edmund departed this life between 9 May 1632 and 3 March 1635 in Newtown [Cambridge], Middlesex County, Massachusetts. "3 March 1634/35: It is ordered that Ruth Lockwood, widow, shall bring all the writings that her husband left in her hands to John Haynes, Esq., & Simon Bradstreet, on the third day of the next week, who shall detain the same in their hands till the next Court, when they shall be disposed of to those to whom they belong." - 7 April 1635: The court gives the church at Wateron 14 days to "dispose" of the children, and if not done, the court will do as they think best; this is done with Robert Lockwood's consent [executor of the will] and the court also discharges Robert as having completed his duties as executor. - 2 June 1635: The church had not done as asked in the order of 7 April. The court then handled the distribution of Edmund's estate, except for the "elder children" whom the church was given the responsibility of finding guardians for them.2
