Ephraim Lockwood

Ephraim was born on Sunday, 1 December 1641 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Robert Lockwood and Susannah Norman. Ephraim married Mercy St. John on 8 June 1665 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Hannah], James [4/21/1683-5/05/1769] [m. 10/23/1707 Lydia Smith & 2nd. 10/25/1753 Mercy Bushnell].1 Ephraim made his will on 13 January 1684/85 at Norwalk.
Ephraim Lockwood, being ill and weake, apprehending he shall not continue long in the land of the living, being aged about forty three years, and making bequests: to beloved wife, my dwelling house and farm lot with barn and orchard during widowhood for four years; then half to Daniel Lockwood, my second son; to wife during her natural life, 5 acres of my hither [i.e., nearer] Stoney hill lot between Robert Steward and Samuel Sention, my brother, of whom I purchased it; then to son Ephraim; to wife during her natural life, my meadow in the Indian field in ye rear lots to the river; then to son Ephraim; to wife, household items, cow, two sheep, half my meadow at the [barrs?] during widowhood; to wife, pasture lying at [Jakins?] lot during her natural life; then to son Daniel; to eldest son John, at 21, the home lot granted by the town on the corner of a hill called rayle hill, my farther Stony hill lot, my bogs at the wolf pit I purchased of Roscue, my bog at the new dam, my meadow at Saugatuke river, and a lot granted to me by the town; to Daniel, 2 acres of my Stoney hill lot, half my land in Benedicks field, half my meadow at the barrs, and my Pine hill lot; to Ephraim, the "tother" half of my land in Benedicks field with what to have of his other part; to Eliphalet my son, my Indian field upland at Saugatuke river, only his mother to have what is moveable for her natural life, then to Eliphalet; to son Joseph, my Indian field lot that was granted by the town to Mr. Canfield and my little lot granted by the town to Mr. Canfield, my part of sd. lot lying at Mr. Hanfords and Platts; to son James, my half part of Canfields Island with a swamp lying on the other side of the river lying at Ralf Keelers bridge; the rest of my estate to bring it to level, one third to wife and John a double portion of my moveables "a trade tenn pounds" "and then everyone a share proportionally"; son James his portion of his onkels estate [James St. John's estate] willed to him; Sarah to have £20 at 18 years of age or marriage; wife to bring up sons until 21 only; she can bind any of them out for trades. He declared this to be his last will and testament and nominated his wife and son John Lockwood as executors and Mark Sention and John Fitch as overseers. Ephraim departed this life in Norwalk. The inventory of Ephraim's estate was taken on Friday, 20 July 1685 by Walter Hoyte, John Platt and James Olmstead. They valued his home lot to be £80 and his other lands at £100. The entire estate was valued at £322 16s. 2d. Listed on the same page at the end of the inventory is a list of his children's birth dates: John [3/19/1665/66], Daniel [8/13/1668], Sarah [11/03/1670], Ephraim [5/01/1673], Eliphalet [2/271675/76], Joseph [4/01/1680], James [4/21/1683].2 His will was probated on 2 November 1685. Ephraim's widow, Mercy, presented the inventory to the court on this date. Since Ephraim had only devised 1/2 of his house in his will, the court ruled that it should go to the widow for her natural life and then to Daniel.
