Mercy St. John

     Mercy was born circa 1641 in Connecticut. She was the daughter of Mathias Sension [St. John] & Mary Tinker. Mercy married Ephraim Lockwood, son of Robert Lockwood and Susannah Norman, on 8 June 1665 in Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut. John [3/19/1665/66-1/03/1687], Daniel [8/13/1668-1/01/1712] [m. ca. 1699 Sarah Benedict], Sarah [11/03/1670] [m. 5/__1695 John Platt], Ephraim [5/01/1673-before 1694; d.s.p. bef. 1694], Eliphalet [2/271675/76-10/14/1753] [m. 10/11/1699 Mary Gold], Joseph [4/01/1680-11/23/1760] [m. 8/14/1707 Mary Weed & 2nd. Hannah], James [4/21/1683-5/05/1769] [m. 10/23/1707 Lydia Smith & 2nd. 10/25/1753 Mercy Bushnell].1 Mercy's husband, Ephraim, died before 20 July 1685 in Norwalk, leaving her a widow. Mercy departed this life in Norwalk. The inventory of Mercy's estate was taken on Monday, 1 February 1694. By James Olmsted and Samuel Smith, with Andrew Messenger. The value of Mercy's portion of the estate was given as £5 85s. 6d. Immediately following the itemized inventory of Mercy's estate was: Memorandum: There was given by Ephraim Lockwood Sen'r, deceased, by will unto his son Ephraim Lockwood, in lands, which said Ephraim son deceased before he attained to age, and was never possessed thereof" -- one parcel of upland containing 5 acres at Stony Hill... also a parcel in Benedicks field, also moveables; also half a meadow at ye bars [elis?] neck," and for each of these gives a value, totalling over £42.
"An inventory of the estate of John Lockwood of Norwalk dec'sd," -- a parcel of land at Raille hill so called, a lot at Stony hill, a parcel of boggy meadow, a small parcel of meadow at Sacotuck river, land in the woods and commonage, wearing apparel, bible, silver buttons & buckle, totalling over £84.
The court ordered that "Whereas formerly the will and inventory of Ephraim Lockwood deceased was approved in Court and the widow and relict of said Ephraim & Ephraim & John Lockwood are also deceased and the estate not distributed; and an inventory of the estates of the widow, Ephraim & John, ye deceased, are exhibited to a County Court held at Fairfield this 12 of March 1694/5, and by reason as aforesaid the former estate was never divided; this Court do find yt ye inventorys now presented, with what belongs unto those now surviving are: Daniel, Eliphalet, Joseph & James and Sarah Lockwood of their father's estate doth amount to the sum of £437:5, which this Court do distribute as followeth, viz: the sd. Daniel to have £146:5:2, Eliphalet to have £96:3, Joseph to have £65, & James to have £65; 5'ly and lastly, Sarah to have £65, which this Court, although it be not altogether consonant to the law, do adventure to do; Daniel Lockwood, ye eldest son of sd. dec'd Ephraim, engaging in ye presents of the Court for himself, heirs and assigns, that his brothers Eliphalet, Joseph and James, who are under age, and his sister Sarah, all of them shall be satisfied with & rest in ye above distribution when they come of age; otherwise that he will be responsible for their satisfaction, the said distribution being done with the consent of the said Eliphalet and Daniel; and this Court do appoint and impower the above said Daniel Lockwood to administer on the estate of the above widow, Ephraim and John Lockwood, he to pay and receive all just debts due from and to the sd estate and make distribution of the above sd estates according to ye above order of Court.1
