     Mary was born on Thursday, 16 November 1780 in Howells Depot, Orange County, New York. She was the daughter of Samuel Mapes and Mary Smith. Mary married Jesse Carpenter in 1794 in Orange County, New York. Mary died on Sunday, 30 September 1804 in Howells Depot, Orange County, New York, in childbirth. She was buried in Howells, Orange County, New York, in the Mapes Burying Ground.

  1. [S76] Frank Mapes Ham, Mapes Family of America, page 169 - MARY MAPES was born Nov. 16, 1780 and died Sept. 30, 1804 in childbirth at the age of 24 years. She was buried in the Mapes Burying Ground at Howells, N. Y., the first burial of record in the plot. She was married to Jesse Carpenter by whom she had five children. After her death he married a second time and by the second marriage had eleven children. The children of Mary Mapes Carpenter were: Harriet Carpenter b. Sept. 18, 1795, William Carpenter b. Sept. 2, 1797, Mahala Carpenter b. Feb. 7, 1800, Jesse Carpenter b. Sept. 13, 1802, John Mapes Carpenter b. Sept. 30 1804.
