Joseph Lockwood

M, b. 6 August 1638, d. 14 April 1717
Joseph was born on Friday, 6 August 1638 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Robert Lockwood and Susannah Norman. Joseph married Isabell Beecham, daughter of Robert Beacham, circa 1662 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. Joseph and Isabell were the parents of Robert [1667 or before]. Joseph is the father of Susannah, John and Sarah. It is not conclusive if they are the children of Isabell or a second wife.1 Isabell died leaving Joseph a widower. Joseph possibly married Hannah Jessop, daughter of Edward Jessop and Elizabeth Bridges, after 4 November 1668 in Westport, Westchester County, New York, at Green's Farm. She was not married on the date of her mother's marriage.2 Joseph was one of the seven original members of the church at Green's Farm in 1715.3 Joseph departed this life on Wednesday, 14 April 1717 in Westport at Green's Farm at age 78 years, 8 months and 8 days.

Important Notes:

It is not a fact, but an assumption, that Hannah Jessop, married Robert Beacham’s son-in-law, Joseph Lockwood as his second wife. First, look at the facts: Robert Beacham in his will dated 14 November 1688, mentions his grandchildren: Robert Lockwood being of age at least 21 years [born by 14 Nov. 1667 or before], Susanna being of age at least 18 years [born 14 Nov. 1670 or before], John being under the age of 21 [born after 14 Nov. 1667] & Sarah being under the age of 18 [born after 14 Nov. 1670]. Hannah was noted in her father’s will of 6 Aug. 1666 of being under 18 and not married. It has also been noted that she and her brother, Edward, went to live with their mother after she married Robert Beacham just after the license date of 4 Nov. 1668. These dates preclude Hannah [if she were married to Joseph Lockwood] being the mother of Robert who had to be born no later than 1667. It is possible that Joseph’s first wife died and Hannah married Joseph as his second wife, but it is an assumption with no definitive documentation. After Robert Beacham’s death, on 25 Dec. 1690, Hannah’ s mother gave a Deed of gift of all her lands and personal estate to her son, Edward, not mentioning or leaving anything to either of her daughters, Elizabeth of Hannah. It appears that both were deceased by that date. The assumption is made by many that Hannah married Joseph Lockwood soon after her mother’s marriage to Robert Beacham. This is a logical assumption and a good one, but she can not be the mother of all the children in Beacham’s will.
