Gershom Lockwood1

Gershom was born on Sunday, 6 September 1643 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Robert Lockwood and Susannah Norman. He was one of the twenty-seven propietors of Greenwich, Connecticut, which was founded in 1640where he was the leading carpenter and builder and held many positions of trust. He first married circa 1662 to an unknown woman, the mother of his children. Gershom had children: Joseph [1663-1748] [m. 1700 Sarah Green], Elizabeth [1665-6/03/1702] [m. 1/18/1694 John Bates] Gershom [1666] [m. Mary], Hannah [12/23/1667-12/28/1745] [m. 1686 John Burwell & 1692 Thomas Hanford], Abraham [1669-1747] [m. 1693 Sarah Westcott], Sarah [1672-] [m. 1/25/1699/00 Nathaniel Selleck, 2nd. 2/03/1713/14 Benjamin Hickok & 3rd 11/17/1745 Samuel Kellogg]. Gershom married 2nd Elizabeth Dickerson on 3 August 1697 in Greenwich.2 Gershom departed this life on Sunday, 12 March 1719 in Greenwich at age 75 years, 6 months and 6 days. He was buried there in Tomac Burying Ground. The inscripton on his tombstone reads: Here Lyes ye Body of Mr. Gershom Lockwood aged 77 years deceased Mar. 12 1718.3 Letters of Administration of his estate were granted on 1 April 1719 to his widow, Elizabeth and his son, Gershom..
