Edmund Lockwood1
M, b. before 15 January 1598/99, d. 3 March 1635
Edmund was born in Combs, County Suffolk, England. He was christened there on 15 January 1598/99 in St. Mary's Church. He was the son of Edmund Lockwood and Ales Cowper. Edmund married Ruth (?) circa 1624. Edmund and Ruth had a son Edmund [circa 1625] [m. 1/07/1656 Hannah Scott, daughter of Thomas Scott]. According to estate papers there were other children, no names mentioned. Edmund and his family immigrated in 1630 from England, settling first in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 3 March 1634/35 “It is ordered that Ruth Lockwood , widow, shall bring all the writings that her husband left in her hands to John Haynes, Esq, & Simon Bradstreete, on the third day of the next week, who shall detain the same in their hands till the next Court, when they shall be disposed of to those to whom they belong” 7 April 1635 The church at Watertown, with the consent of his brother, Robert Lockwood, executor, is to dispose of the children and the estate of the deceased. If the task is not performed in 14 days, it will be turned over to the court. 2 June 1635 The task had not been completed so the Court evaluated the estate and proportioned it out to the widow and children.2 Edmund departed this life on Saturday, 3 March 1635 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
Important Notes: The article in Great Migration concerning Edmund Lockwood first states in the estate records that his widow was Ruth. Later in the article, it states that he married second Elizabeth Masters, daughter of John Masters, who married second, Cary Latham. Later yet in giving the children of Edmund, they list John born in 1632 in Cambridge as the son of Edward Lockwood and his wife Elizabeth. With Ruth as the widow of Edmund, he could not be married to Elizabeth Masters who marries second Cary Latham. It appears that Elizabeth is the wife of Edward, not Edmund. – KLM.
