Francis William was born on Monday, 29 July 1833 in Morrissania, Westchester County, New York, at the family home at Rose Bank. He was the son of William Haight Leggett and Margaret Peck Wright. 18 June 1860, Francis was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in the City, County & State of New York. Enumerated in this household were Francis W. Leggett [26 New York - merchant].3 Francis William Leggett was Captain of Company F, 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. The unit's history, according to http://www.geocities.com/~micivilwar/cwmireg.htm: The Ninth Cavalry began its organization in the fall of 1862, at Coldwater. Francis married Laura Lacey Acker on 24 March 1864 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.4 Francis & Laura had children: Laura Lacey [1 Jan. 1865- ][single], Lacy Wright [16 Feb. 1875-5 Aug. 1875]. 3 June 1880, Francis and Laura was listed on the U.S. Federal Census at West 10th Street in the City, County & State of New York. Enumerated in this household were Martha E. van Wych [58 New York], Martha van Wych [22 New York], borders: Francis W. Leggett [45 New York], his wife: Laura L. [36 Michigan], Laura L. Leggett [15 New York] and others.5 Francis's wife, Laura, died on 20 March 1899 in the City, County & State of New York, leaving him a widower. 1 June 1900, Francis was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in New York City. Enumerated in this household were Francis W. Leggett [66 New York - July 1833], Laura L. [35 New York - January 1865] & Servants: Winnie Orvens [33 Ireland - February 1867] & Mary [34 Ireland - August 1835].6 Francis departed this life on Monday, 11 February 1907 at 51 East 126th Street in the City, County & State of New York at age 73 years, 6 months and 10 days.7 He was buried at Bronx in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
