Josiah Hotchkiss

     Josiah was born on Monday, 7 November 1757 in Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was the son of Ladwick Hotchkiss and Mary North. On 10 November 1757, he was christened in Kensington, New Haven County, Connecticut, at the Kensington Church. He was christened by Reverand Samuel Clark. Josiah married Mary Root on 22 February 1781. Josiah married 2nd Ester [---] Carrington. He was a blacksmith and lived in Plainville [Farmington Plains]. He was a kind & honest man. Josiah and Mary had children: Oliver 8/20/1783-11/27/1868] [m. Rebecca Sturdevant] & Jeremiah [1787-8/21/1834]. The 1800 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Farmington, Hartford County, Connecticut, the family of Josiah Hotchkiss [01210:11111].1 Josiah departed this life on Saturday, 14 April 1832 in Plainville [Farmington Plains], Hartford County, Connecticut, at age 74 years, 5 months and 7 days. He was buried there in Old East Street Burying Ground. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Here lyes the remains of Josiah Hotchkiss who was born Nov. 7, 1757 Died April 14 1832. Also near here lie interred the remains of Ladwick his father who died March 7, 1723.
