Samuel Haight1

M, b. 9 April 1720, d. 14 October 1808
     Samuel was born on Tuesday, 9 April 1720 in the Town of Flushing, Queens County, Long Island, New York. He was the son of James Haight and Anna Pope. Samuel married Rebecca Fowler, daughter of William Fowler and Mary (?), in 1741 in New York. Samuel and his family occupied 250 acres of land belonging to the Phillipse Manor as early as 1745. He had an annual rent of three pounds until 1785 when he bought the land from the State of New York for 988 pounds. Phillipse has lost the land by forfiture due to his allegiance to the crown. The point of junction of the three towns of New Castle, North Castle & Mount Pleasant is on that property. Thomas and Mary Leggett also lived here at Phillipse Manor. They were Quakers. Samuel's wife, Rebecca, died in Phillipse Manor, Westchester County, New York, leaving him a widower. Samuel married 2nd Abigail Lane. She was the widow of Mr. Cheeseman.__. The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates, the family of. He made his will 25th day of fourth month 1803.

Be it Remembered That I Samuel Haight of Mount Pleasant County of Westchester and State of New York, Farmer being in a low state of health But of a perfect mind and memory now touching those worldly things that divine providence has been pleased to favor me with in this live I dispose of as follows, first I do order and it is my will that my Executors hereafter appointed pay my funeral charges and also all my just debts out of my Estate I give and bequeath to my son Jesse the use of one hundred and fifty acres of Land until my wifes decease then I do order and it is my Will that fifty acres of the said Land of the North side be sold by my Executors and divided Equally amongst my Children and if any of my children should be deceased that their part be equally divided amongst their children and I do order and it is my Will that my son Jesse to have the use of said hundred acres until his decease and likewise if he has any Issue that the Land be his and his heirs absolutely forever it is my Will and I do order that his widow have a comfortable living of the said farm as long as she remain his widow and no longer and then the slaid hundred acres of land to be sold by my Executor ad equally divided amongst my Children as above mentioned the said farm Bounded as followeth - - Beginning at the North East corner of James Rheumers Land joining Abijah Haights Land thence easterly in company with Abijah until it comes to the Road that leads from Abijah Haights to James Suttons thence Northerly with the said road on the west side of the same thence Beginning at the said mentioned corner and running Northerly with the said Rhuemers and also Daniel Mathews Land those two east lines to run so far Northerly as to make the aforesaid one hundred and fifty acres of land both of the line to be at one and the same in length it is my Will that my son Jesse shall be at the cost of keeping on the above said Land one horse and one cow for my widow on grass and hay and to cut and draw my widows firewood fit for the fire and also to make fires for her and also my son Jesse to take my apprentice boy Amos Heady into his charge or tody [?] and to fulfill the Indenture and whenever my widows calls on said Amos to do anything for her he is at her command I give to my son Jesse all my farming utensils I give and bequeath to my beloved wife all the moveable Estate that she brought to me at her disposal and the west room an the west Bedroom of the house and a priverledge in the Chamber and in the Celler and Cider and Apples for her own use one horse and one Cow - - give and bequeath to my son James all my lands on the east side of the above said Road lying and being in Mount Pleasant and New Castle County and State above said bounded as follows: South by Abijah Haight East by Brunke River Northerly by the Land of William Juries west by the above mentioned Road to him his heirs and assigns forever. - - I give and bequeath to my two sons JAMES AND Walter to them their heirs and assigns forever all my lands quality and quantytn that lays North of the above mentioned one hundred fifty acres of Land and I order Samuel to pay to my Grand daughter Rebeka daughter of my son William deceased the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to her or her heirs or assigns forever and I order my son Walter to my two daughters Anne and Phebe the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars to be equally between them or their heirs or assigns forever I give and bequeath to my grandson Samuel Kipp fifty dollars to his and his heirs assigns forever I give and bequeath to my three daughters Anne Phebe and Seviah to them their heirs and assigns forever all the remainder of my moveable Estate and Seviah to receive the equal and fourth part of what is given to them and also they are or must pay unto the above mentioned Samuel Kipp what is above given to him and the said Seviah to pay to the one fourth part of what is given to the said Samuel Kipp and I order and it is my Will that my son Rubin have the sum of five shillings and I give to my daughters namely Mary and Mireune the sum of 10 shillings each - - I constitute make and appoint my two sons James and Walter and my grandson Benjamin Kipp to be my Executors to this my last Will and Testament disallowing and disannulling all other Wills and Testaments ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. - - - Sealed with my seal and dated this twenty fifth of fourth month one thousand eight hundred and three 1803. - -Sealed, Published and declared this to by my last Will and Testament - - - Samuel [his mark] Haight - - - In the Presence of us Isaac McKeel Samuel Haight, Gary Carpenter.2

Samuel departed this life on Friday, 14 October 1808 in Mount Pleasant, Westchester County, New York, at age 88 years, 6 months and 5 days. His will was probated on 7 November 1808.

He occupied land belonging to the Philipse Manor as early as 1745, paying £3 per year for 250 acres, which he purchased, in the name of his brother Caleb, of the, Commissioners of the State of New York in 1785, for £988 N. Y. currency, it having been forfeited by Philipse on account of his allegiance to the crown. The point of junction of the towns of New Castle, North Castle, and Mount Pleasant is upon this land.
