Henry Chapin

M, b. before January 1631, d. 15 August 1718
     Henry was born in the parish of Berry Palmeroy, Devonshire, England. He was christened there in January 1631 in St. Mary's Church.1 He was the son of Deacon Samuel Chapin and Cecily Penny. At an early age, he signed on board a British ship & served there for seven years. Soon after he commanded a merchant ship sailing between London & Boston. In 1659, he left the sea & settled at Springfield, sharing with his brother, Japhet, his father's gift of lands in Chicopee [just north of Springfield] where he built his house.2 Henry married Bethia Cooley on 15 December 1664 in Springfield.2 Henry's wife, Bethia, died on 11 December 1711 in Springfield leaving him a widower. Henry departed this life on Monday, 15 August 1718 in Springfield.2
