Horace Mapes, eldest son of Samuel A. and Mary J. Mapes, was born November 9, 1831 in Montgomery, Orange County, New York and was united in marriage at Toronto, Sullivan County, New York to Mary J. Williams who was born October 6, 1834 at Beaver Brook, Sullivan County, together they have walked for fifty years sharing each others joys and sorrows in sickness and in health, in prosperity and adversity.
On March 15, 1854, they in company with his father and mother, two brothers, John and Charles, came to Michigan, while the country was then but comparatively new, and settled on a farm in the township of Iosco. Livingston County, where they have always lived til three years last November, they moved to Stockbridge having decided to lay aside the heavy cares of life and spend the remainder of their days in the enjoyment of what they have toiled so hard to earn. Truly the Lord has blessed them in basket and store, and never a stranger entered that home without receiving a warm welcome and many a homeless person found shelter under their roof. Two children came to gladden their home a son and a daughter, Mr. Will Mapes of Stockbridge and Mrs. John Jackson of Unadilla, who was born in the house where had lived grandfather, father and son.
After the guests had arrived to the number of about forty, although more were invited, but owing to the cold and bad roads were unable to get there, Miss Gladys Mapes sang a piece entitled "Golden Days", and a letter was read from Elder Hicks from Grass Lake regretting that he and his wife could not be there on that happy occasion. Mr. McCloy made a short impromptu speech. Kitt Jackson read a piece of poetry "Fifty Years Ago." Mr. Mapes then thanked the company for their presence.
