    Samuel Vail was born at Southold on Long Island and married there. Before 1730 he removed with his wife to Shelter Island, then within the legal jurisdiction of Southold. He was one of the twenty freemen and heads of families who met April 7, 1730, and organized Shelter Island as a separate town. He served the town as constable and collector in 1735 and as overseer of the poor in 1741. Shortly after that date he removed with his family to Orange County, N. Y., and settled in the "West division of Goshen.", No record of his will has been found and the date of his death is not known. Children:
