Mercy Mayo1

     Mercy was born in 1664 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Captain Samuel Mayo and Thomasine Lumpkin. Mercy married Samuel Sears on 10 March 1684 in Harwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.1 Samuel and Mercy had children: Hannah [7/01/1685] [m. 11/02/1710 John Vincent], Samuel [9/15/1687- ca. 1726] [m. 11/02/1710 Ruth [Merrick] Foster], Nathaniel [9/23/1689-7/19/1720] [m. 10/10/1712 Susanna [Gray] Foster], Tamsen [ 11/13/1691-7/17/1761] [m. 3/19/1718 John Freeman Esquire], Jonathan [9/03/1683-9/03/1738] [m. Elzaberth Hawes], Josreph [6/15/1695-8/25/1765] [m. 4/17/1718 Elizabeth Paddock], Joshua [5/03/1697-7/21/1754] [m. 9/17/1719 Mary Thatcher], Judah [10/29/1699-<12/04/1775] [m. 11/01/1731 Mary Paddock], John [7/18/1701-5/21/1774] [m. 11/__/1734 Grace Paddock], Seth5/27/1703-ca. 3/05/1749] [m. 10 14/1725 Priscella Rider] & Benjamin [7/16/1706-<6/19/1749] [m. 3/16/1732 Lydia Rider, 2nd 7/26/1735 Mercy Snow & 3rd 6/30/1737 Abigail Burgess]. Mercy's husband, Samuel, died on 8 January 1742 in Brewster, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, leaving her a widow. Mercy departed this life on Monday, 20 January 1748/49 in Brewster at age 85 years. She was buried there in the Ancient Sears Cemetery. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Here Lyeth Buried ye Body of Mrs. Mercy Sears Wife of Capt. Samuel Sears who Departed this Life Jan 20th A D 1748/9 in ye 84th year of her Age.
