Mary was born on Thursday, 16 November 1780 in Howells Depot, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York. She was the daughter of Samuel Mapes and Mary Smith. Mary married Jesse Carpenter in 1794 in Orange County, New York. Jesse & Mary had children: Harriet [9/18/1795], William [9/02/1797], Mahala [2/07/1800], Jesse [9/13/1802], John Mapes [9/30/1804]. Mary died on Sunday, 30 September 1804 in Howells Depot, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, in childbirth. She was buried at Howells, the town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, in the Mapes Burying Ground.

She was buried in the Mapes Burying Ground at Howells, N. Y., the first burial of record in the plot. She was married to Jesse Carpenter by whom she had five children. After her death he married a second time and by the second marriage had eleven children. The children of Mary Mapes Carpenter were: Harriet Carpenter b. Sept. 18, 1795, William Carpenter b. Sept. 2, 1797, Mahala Carpenter b. Feb. 7, 1800, Jesse Carpenter b. Sept. 13, 1802, John Mapes Carpenter b. Sept. 30 1804.
