On the records of the Purchase Monthly Meeting of Friends, July, 1782, is a letter from James Haight, narrating at some length his conduct towards a party of British or Tories, who called at his house in the night on the 25th of June, and attempted to force him to act as guide for them. As they urged him " in such a press ing manner," he went as far as the next house with them; but refused to go further, " unless they tied and carried" him, when they left him. His name also occurs on the same records in 1777 and '78, as committee, etc., and on the Quarterly Meeting records in 1780.
