Thomas Greene

M, b. before 4 June 1628, d. 5 June 1717
     Thomas was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He was christened there on 4 June 1628 in St. Thomas Church. He was the son of Dr. John Greene and Joanna Tattershall. Thomas married Elizabeth Barton on 30 June 1659 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. One year after his marriage, he purchased a stone house from his brother-in-law James Sweet, it was a stone house, one of the earliest built in Old Warwick and the only stone house. During King Philip’s War the people of Warwick were warned that the colony could not protect them and were given places to stay in New Port and Providence. Thomas and his family and a few neighbors, stayed at the house. The settlement was attacked and every home was burned except the stone house. This stone house was to house Thomas’ family and descendants until 1795. Thomas and Elizabeth had children: Elizabeth [7/12/1660], Thomas [8/04/1662] [m.5/27/1696 Ann Greene - 1st cousin], Benjamin [1/10/1666-9/22/1758], Richard [3/05/1667], Welthian [1/23/1670], Rufus [1/06/1673] & Nathaniel [4/10/1679]. Thomas's wife, Elizabeth, died on 20 August 1693 in Warwick leaving him a widower. Thomas departed this life on Saturday, 5 June 1717 in Warwick. He was buried in a burial plot on his property where many have his family and descenants are also buried.
