Noah Townsend Carpenter1

     Noah Townsend was born in 1814 in Cornwall, Orange County, New York. He was the son of Townsend Carpenter and Elizabeth Truesdell. Noah married Sarah McDougall circa 1844 in Veteran, Chemung County, New York. Noah & Sarah had at least three children who died before they did - one in Illinois, one on route to California & one in California. 6 December 1850, Noah and his wife, Sarah, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Rockton, Winnebago County, Illinois. Enumerated in this household were Noah T. Carpenter [36 New York], Sarah [32 New York], Elizabeth [5 Illinois], L. George Sherman [23 New York], Susan Sherman [19 New York], Wheaton Scoville [22 Canada] [blacksmith] & Daniel Seley [26 New York] [farmer]. Noah is a merchant.2 They went to California about 1853. When Noah died, he had no living children. 12 August 1870, Noah and Sarah was listed on the U.S. Federal Census at Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. Enumerated in this household were Sarah Avery [35 ---], Noah Carpenter [54 New York], Sarah [53 New York] and others. Noah is a painter.3 Noah departed this life on Thursday, 10 February 1876 in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California.
