Nathaniel was born before 28 December 1622 in Rodborough Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. On 28 December 1622, he was christened in Rodborough Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, England, at St. Mary Magdalene Church.3 He was the son of Thomas Bliss and Margaret Hulins. Nathaniel married Katherine Chapin, daughter of Deacon Samuel Chapin and Cecily Penny, on the 20th day of the 9th month 1646 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts.4,5 Nathaniel departed this life before the 18th of day of the 9th month 1654 in Springfield.6,7 He was buried on the 18th day of the 9th month 1654 there in the Springfield Cemetery.8 His will was probated.
Springfield: March: 5th 1654/5 Concerninge the disposinge of the estate of Katharine Bliss Widdow late wife of Nathaneel Bliss deceased who died intestate. It was Ordered that shee should enjoy all the Estate, left by her said Husband, and that shee may be carefull of the children which shee had by her said Husband which children are for present of very tender yeares: And it Is further Ordered that when her Eldest Son attaynes to the age of One and Twenty yeares shee shall pay unto him, the Summ of Eight pounds, and when the Two daughters attayn to the age of sixteen yeares shee shall pay to each of them the summ of Foure pounds: and Foure pounds to the youngest son at the age of One and Twenty yeares: And in case any of them dy under such ages aforesaid, the portion or portions of the decease shalbe divided equally among the rest: Know all men by these presents that whereas there is a marriage intended to be solemnized between the above mentioned the Widdow Katherine Bliss of this Town, and Thomas Gilbert of Windsor. The said Thomas Gilbert doth for good causes and considerations him hereunto mooving covenante and promise, and hereby bynd himself his heires executors and administrators to pay or cause to be paid unto the children above mentioned of the said Widdow their Severall portions in the order above mentioned, and at the severall tymes of payment above mentioned: In witness whereof he hath hereunto sett his hand this 23d of May 1655. He married Catherine Chapin 20 Nov 1646 in Belstone, Devonshire, England. She was born about 1626 in Berry, Devonshire, England, the daughter of Samuel Chapin and Cecily Penny.
They immigrated to the American Colonies immediately after they were married. Their first child was born the next year in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Nathaniel’s family was perhaps a little better off materially than the Puritan society approved of, as on occasion they were among those families chastised for dressing too extravagantly as follows:
..the following persons were: vizt "presented by ye Grand Jury to ye Courte at Northampton March 26, 1676 some for wearing silke & yt in a flonting manner & attire for Long haire & and other extravagancies,Contrary to honest & Labor Order & Demeaning not Becoming a Wilderness State at ye Profession of Christianity & Religion."
In the list of ye offenders were the followeing from this village: "Wife of Henry Rogers, Lidia Excile, Hanah Morgan, Sally Gilburt, Hanah Leonard, Nathll Bliss, Thos Stebbins & his wife, John Bakers wife, Jonath Stebbins, Henry Chapin, Coporal Holyoke, Mary and Sarah Colton, Sarah Cooley, Mary Holyoke, Meriam Merricke, Sarah & Mary Dumbleton."

Nathaniel died at the early age of 32 in 1654, leaving a widow and four small children. Catherine married again the next year to Thomas Gilbert, having another four children by him. Three years later, when they were well settled, he m. Catherine, daughter of Dea. Samuel Chapin, of Springfield, Nov. 20, 1646, a few days before his sister, Mary, was m. to Joseph Parsons. Children: ... Widow Catherine Bliss, about 8 months after her husband's death, m. Thomas Gilbert July 31, 1655; by him she had 4 more children, when he died June 5, 1662, she soon m. her 3rd husband, Samuel Marshfield, Dec. 28, 1664, and by himshe had her usual number of 4 children, making 12 in all. Not much time lost in mourning her widowhood; but times were hard for a widow with little children, and men at this time out numberer the women in the colonies, and there was no lack of suitors for single women. - [S1718] Myrtle Stevens Hyde, The Marriage of Thomas Bliss & Margaret Hulins, Nathaniel, baptized, on 28 Dec. 1622 at Rodborough, 11 miles south of Gloucester, was surly the first child of Thomas & Margaret. Frequently first children were baptized at the maternal grandparents' parish even tho the young parents resided elsewhere.
