Irena Vail

     Irena was born on Tuesday, 19 July 1763 in Orange County, New York. She was the daughter of Isaiah Vail and Abigail Meeker. Irena married Enos Mapes, son of Samuel Mapes and Mary Smith, on 26 March 1783 in Orange County, New York. Enos was a farmer. He settled the "Mile Square" tract which he helped his father to clear from the wilderness. He was one of the executors of his father's estate. The 1790 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Enos Mapes [12:3].² The 1800 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Enos Mapes [31110:12010].³ The 1810 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Enos Mapes [22201:21201].⁴ The 1820 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at the Town of Wallkill, Orange County, New York, the family of Enos Mapes [020201:00201].⁵ Irena departed this life on Tuesday, 15 February 1848 in Howells Depot, Orange County, New York. She was buried in Howells, Orange County, New York, in the Mapes Burying Ground.
