John Thorne1

M, b. 16 April 1796, d. 24 June 1872
     John was born on Saturday, 16 April 1796 in Cornwall, Orange County, New York. He was the son of Daniel Thorne & Mary Wendell. They went to Horseheads about 1816. John married Ann Carpenter, daughter of Townsend Carpenter and Elizabeth Truesdell, on 11 September 1823 in Elmira Township, Tioga County, New York. At the home of Ann's parents. After their marriage, they resided at Horseheads, Chemung Co., New York on a farm, three miles east of the village. Enumerated in this household were John Thorn [63 New York], his wife: Ann [56 New York], children: Ann [23 New York], Daniel [20 New York], Townsend [16 New York], & Ellen [10 New York].4 10 August 1870, John was listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Horseheads. Enumerated in this household were John Thorne [74 New York], son: Daniel [30 New York], Daniel's wife: Margaret [30 New York], & Effie [1 New York]. John is a retired farmer. He is living next door to son Henry.5 John departed this life on Monday, 24 June 1872 in Horseheads at age 76 years, 2 months and 8 days. He was buried there in the Maple Grove Cemetery. The inscription on their tombstone reads: John Thorne Died June 24, 1872 Aged 76 yrs 2 mo. 8 d. - - - Ann Thorne Died 20 June 1868 Aged 63 yrs. 8 mo. 2 d.
