Deborah Phelps

     Deborah was born on Monday, 23 November 1829 in the City, County & State of New York. She was the daughter of Dr. James L. & Catharine [Vanderpool] Phelps. Deborah married Samuel Mott Leggett, son of William Haight Leggett and Margaret Peck Wright, on 23 December 1852 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, at the home of Alfred Williams. By Rev. Oliver Taylor.¹ Samuel & Deborah had children: Ada Louise [3/10/1854- ] [m. 6/17/1875 Edward Chester Smith [10/01/1845] [s/o Edward Chester & Julia Phoenix (Talbot) Smith] & Alfred Augustus [1/01/1857-11/07/1875][single]. 12 July 1860, Deborah and her husband Samuel were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Commerce Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Samul Leggett [40 New York], his wife: Deborah [30 New York], Oscar [16 New York], Julia [13 New York], Ada [6 Michigan] & Alfred [3 Michigan].² 23 August 1870, Deborah and her husband, Samuel, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Commerce Township. Enumerated in this household were Samuel Legget [50 New York-farmer], his wife: Deborah [40 New York], Julia C. [23 New York], Addie L. [16 Michigan] & Alfred [13 Michigan]. Deborah departed this life on Thursday, 25 May 1871 in Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, at age 41 years, 6 months and 2 days. She was buried there in the Oak Hill Cemetery. In plot 2-034. The inscription on her tombstone reads: Deb. wife of Samuel M. Leggett - Age 42c years.³
