William Nickerson

William was born in 1698 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lieut. Thomas Nickerson and Mary Bangs. William married Bethia Harding circa 1725 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. William and Bethia had children: Hatsel [1722-3/11/1793] [m. 3/22/1744 Hannah Myrick], Tabitha [1723-1753], Nehemiah [1725-1/31/1804] [m. 1/23/1747 Hannah Nickerson], Bethia [1726-4/16/1812] [m. 121/17/1755 Noash Doane], Enos [1728] m. 10/17/1769 Elizabeth Ellis]. William's wife, Bethia, died before 1729 in Chatham leaving him a widower. William may have married 3rd. a woman whose name is unknown [possibly Sarah] and had childfren: Dinah, Abijah, Sarah [-11/06/1780] m. 12/28/1779 David Rockwell. William and Sarah had children: William [ca.1753], Iranah [ca. 1755] [m. Joyce Taylor], Barach [ca. 1757] [m. 12/14/1779 Rebecca Morehouse] & Johnathan [1759] [m. Sublimity Blackmore].1 William made his will on 27 February 1759. The will of William Nickerson of Ridgefield names John, his eldest son, the next eight children, "my last wife Sarah, executor . . . our three children William, Iranah and Barach — and if she have any more, it shall have it's equal portion with my other children by my first and present wives . . . and Dinah's share to be divided equally among her children . . . wife to have "surplus of whole after debts are paid". William departed this life in Ridgefield, Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was survived by his wife and 8 of 12 children. His will was probated on 9 May 1761.

- [S506] Note: The Nickerson Association notes these three children as being of Bethia Harding. However, Bethia's father, Joseph, when listing her children [Bethia being deceased] in his will does not include them. It is therefore concluded that there was an unknown third wife and Sarah Bassett was the fourth wife.
