Sarah Nickerson1
F, b. circa 1644, d. after 1699
Sarah was born circa 1644 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of William Nickerson II and Anne Busby. Sarah married Nathaniel Covell II, son of Nathaniel Covell I, circa 1662 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. That Sarah was an able administrator must be assumed from the fact that she engaged in several land transactions. She sold parcels of her own property, and her father arranged that, at his death, the management of his entire domain should fall to her; and, as agreed, in 1687 she conveyed one half of all the real estate, excepting her father's home farm, to her brother, William. In 1699 she had retained one third of her share of the properties and divided them among her four sons.
References: A. D F. vols. 3, 5, 15 I. Q. N-2. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Monomoit, to the land given to Sarah by her father. It is clear that Sarah was an intelligent woman and an able business woman as she is recorded in several land transactions, and as her father had enough confidence in her to have her manage his affairs and to administer the division of his properties after his death. Sarah's husband, Nathaniel, died in December 1687 in Monomoit, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, leaving her a widow. Sarah departed this life after 1699 in Monomoit, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. It was in 1699 that she distributed her share of othe lands of her father's estate among her four sons.
