Johannes Atwood1
M, b. before 4 February 1582
Johannes was born before 4 February 1582 in Sanderstead Court, County Surrey, England. Derick being his twin. On 4 February 1582, he was christened in County Surrey, England, at the parish church in Gatton & Sanderstead.2 He was the son of Nicholas Atwood and Olive Harmon. He was often referred to as John. Johannes married Joan Coleson on 25 July 1612 in Westminister [Greater London], County Middlesex, England, at St. Martin's-in-the-Field. Johannes and his family moved to Chancery Lane, London sometime after 1614. He was a leather seller in London. He sued his brother, Harmon, in 1631, for land his father left their youngest brother, Richard, who was deceased. He had thought the land should be his since he was now the youngest living son. He lost this suit. His sons; Harmon, John, Stephen & Henry immigrated to America.3

- [S1257] Elijah Francis Atwood, Ye Atte Wode Annuals, Part 1, page 7 - John Wood married Joan Coleson in St. Martin’s July 25, 1612 and two children were baptized at St. Martin’s; Harman, Oct 3, 1613 and John, Dec. 24, 1614. I think they moved to Chancery Lane, London. There is absolutely no doubt that Stephen was brother of these and but little doubt of Henry.
…for in 1631, he sued his brother Harman for lands their father Nicholas had settled on his youngest son, Richard. The later had died so John, now being youngest son, saw a chance for himself. Whence evidently comes the various Atwood traditions of the American ancestor being disinherited, or having best right to estate in England but never claiming it. - [S1257] Elijah Francis Atwood, Ye Atte Wode Annuals, page 5 - Most of their children were baptised at St. Martin's but John & Derrick, "Gemelli," February 4, 1582 are on the parish register of Gatton & Sanderstead.
