John was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. On 15 August 1620, he was christened in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, at St. Thomas Church. John married Ann Almy, daughter of William Almey and Audrey Barlowe, circa 1648 in East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island. John was general recorder of Rhode island in 1652; general solicitor in 1657; attorney-general between 1657 & 1660; assistant between 1600 & 1690, and deputy governor between 1690 & 1700. John departed this life on Tuesday, 27 November 1708 in Warwick, Kent County, Rhode Island. He was buried there at Warwick in Spring Greene Cemetery.
