     John was born on Sunday, 12 February 1606 in Groton Manor, County Suffolk, England. On 16 February 1606, he was christened in Groton, County Suffolk, England.2 John married Martha Ffownes, daughter of Thomas Ffownes II and Anne Winthrop, on 8 February 1631 in Groton, County Suffolk, England.3 He was the govenor of Connecticut in 1657 until his death. John married 2nd Elizabeth Reade in 1635 in England. John made his will on 3 April 1676 at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He made each of his seven children executors. He divided his estate up into nine parts giving two parts to each of his two sons ane one to each of his daughters.4 John departed this life on Sunday, 5 April 1676 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was attending the New England Congress at the time.5 His will was probated on 27 July 1676.

[S435] Charles Kingsbury Miller, William Almy of Portsmouth, Rhode Island 1630, Joris Jansen de Rapalje of Fort Orange, New Amsterdam & Brooklyn, 1623, page 12 - "John, Elizabeth, and Deane Winthrop, aged respectively, 27, 19 and 11, are also enrolled on the list of the Abigail's passengers." - The date of sailing is not given but the ship could not have weighed anchor before the 10th of July, 1635, which is the date of enrollment of John Winthrop, son of the governor of Massachusetts Bay, but she seems to have landed her passengers safely in Boston on the 8th day of October of the same year.
