Louis Pinard

M, b. 12 July 1634, d. circa 12 January 1695
     Louis was born on Wednesday, 12 July 1634 in La Rochelle, Bishopric of La Rochelle, Poitou-Charentes, France, at the parish of Ste-Marguerite. He was the son of Jacques Pinard and Marquerite Gaigneur. He is first recorded in Quebec on 8 September 1647 in Trois-Rivieres having come with the Jesuits.1,2 Louis returned to France 23 August 1650 to complete his surgical studies; he then returned to Quebec in 1656 where he was a master surgeon of the fort at Trois-Rivieres.3 A contract for the marriage of Louis and Marie-Madeleine Hertel was signed on 11 June 1657. It was written by notary Severin Ameau.4 Louis married Marie-Madeleine Hertel, daughter of Jacques Hertel and Marie Marguerie, on 29 October 1658 in Trois-Rivieres at the Cathedral de l'Assomption.5 1666, Louis and Marie-Madeleine were listed on the Canadian Census in Trois-Rivieres. Enumerated in this household were Louis Pinard [30 years], his wife: Marie-Madeleine Hertel [20 years], Francoise [2 years] and Jean Barreau Xaintonge [20 years].6 1667, Louis and Marie-Madeleine were listed on the Canadian Census in Comte de Champlain, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Louis Pinard [34 years], his wife: Marie-Madeleine [21 years], child [3 years] and Jacques Dubois [17 years].7 Louis's wife, Marie-Madeleine, died circa 1680 in Champlain leaving him a widower. A contract for the marriage of Louis Pinard & Marie-Ursule Pepin was signed on 25 November 1680. It was drawn up by notary Antoine Adhemar. It noted that Ursule was the daughter of Guillaume Pepin & Jeanne Meschin and the widow of Nicolas Geoffroy.8 Louis married 2nd Marie-Ursule Pepin on 30 November 1680 in Champlain at the church of La Visitation.9 1681, Louis and Marie-Ursule were listed on the Canadian Census in Champlain. Enumerated in this household were Louis Pinard [44 years], his wife: Marie Pepin [20 years], Marie [16 years], Claude [14 years], Louis [12 years], Marguerite [10 years], Angelique [4 years], Madelein Geoffroy [2 years].10 In 1690, he was noted as a surgeon-major.11 Louis departed this life in Batiscan, Les Chenaux County, Quebec, Canada. He was buried there in the churchyard of St-Francois Xavier on Wednesday, 12 January 1695.12
