Michael was born on Saturday, 3 June 1882 in Hungerford Township, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Louis-Treffle Merand and Harriett Pelland dit Beausoliel. He was christened there on 21 June 1882 in Madoc Township at Sacred Heart of Mary Church. His sponsors were Charles Bosley & Philip Clement.1 Michael married Laura Laveck circa 1906 in Hungerford Township. Michael & Laura had children: Michael [1907- ], Margaret [9/12/1908-1911], Michael Stafford [9/16/1909-9/05/1976][m. 7/27/1933 Elizabeth Wright], John Leo [9/16/1911- ], William F.
