Reverand Azariah Mather

M, b. 29 August 1685, d. 11 February 1726
     Azariah was born on Wednesday, 29 August 1685 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. He was the son of Reverand Samuel Mather and Hannah Treat. He was a minister at the Congregational Church of Saybrook in 1710, and a tutor at Saybrook College. He continued his ministry until 1732. Azariah departed this life on Monday, 11 February 1726 in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut. He was buried in Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, Connecticut, in Cypress Cemetery. The inscription on his stone reads: "Here lyeth the Body of Rev. Azariah Mather born at Windsor August 22, 1685 expired in Saybrook February 11, 1736. He was a faithful minister, a general scholar, an eminent Christian, a very great sufferer, but now in glory a triumpher."1
