     Joseph was born on Thursday, 17 October 1748 in West Farms, Westchester County, New York. He was the son of Thomas Leggett and Mary Embree. Joseph married Miriam Haight, daughter of Samuel Haight and Rebecca Fowler, on 15 September 1774 in New York. The family lived in New York City. He was in business at 379 Pearl Street. They were members of the Friends Society where the births of most of their children are recorded. Joseph & Miriam had children: Joseph, Mary [12/17/1776-2/03/1853][m. 12/12/1798 Jesse Fraim], Hannah [2/01/1781- ][m. Silvanus Folger Jenkins]. Thomas H. [10/26/1787-6/29/1867][m. Avis I._____ & 2nd Frances V. ___]. Reuben [1/29/1790-8/15/1826][m. Mary Marsh], Aaron [11/04/1792-1860][single] and Ester [3/31/1795- ][m. Joseph Corlies].3,4,5 Joseph departed this life on Sunday, 25 September 1803 in the City, County & State of New York. Death Notice: New York Gazette, supplement, Thurdsay, 10 November 1803, amont the list of deaths of "malignant fever" in the epidemic of 1803 was Joseph Leggett. He was buried in the Houston Street Friend's Cemetery.
