Emily Jane was born on Saturday, 9 June 1838 in Hardyston, Sandyston Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of John Howell and Mariett Decker. Emily Jane married Stephen Hayner on 21 February 1861 in Stockbridge, Ingham County, Michigan. Stephen & Emeley had children: Sarah E. [1865-5/11/1896] [m. 5/04/1892 William Oatley], Mary A. [1867-8/15/1888][m. Silas Wilber], James N. [1870-1950] [m. 1902 Josie Lowe], Zella Ett [8/24/1872-5/29/1922] .[m. 1892 Bert Cyrus Oatley] & Julia A. [7/08/1879-9/16/1879] 23 August 1870, Emily and her husband, Stephen, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in Iosco Township, Livingston County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Stephen Hayner [32 New York farmer], his wife: Emily J. [31 Michigan], children: Sarah E. [5 Michigan] & Mary A. [3 Michigan].2 15 June 1880, Emily and her husband, Stephen, were listed on the U.S. Federal Census in LeRoy Township, Ingham County, Michigan. Enumerated in this household were Stephen M.Hayner [42 New York farmer], his wife: Emily J. [41 Michigan], children: Sarah E. [15 Michigan], Mary A. [13 Michigan], James N. [9 Michigan], & Zella E. [7 Michigan].3 Emily died on Thursday, 27 March 1884 in LeRoy Township at age 45 years, 9 months and 18 days at about eleven o'clock in the fore noon. She was buried at Stockbridge in the North Stockbridge Cemetery. The inscription on her tombtone reads: Emily J / his wife / DIED / 27 Mar 1884 / Aged 46y 9m 18d.4
