Captain Joseph Horton1

M, b. 1625, d. before 1696
     Joseph was born in 1625 in Mowsley, Leicestershire, England.2 He was the son of Barnabas Horton and Anne Smith. Joseph married Jane Budde, daughter of Lieutenant Johne Budd and Catheryne Butcher, circa 1647 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.3,4 About 1664, The family moved from Southold, Long Island to Rye, Westchester County where Jane's father & some of her siblings had gone.5 Joseph's wife, Jane, died circa 1667 in Rye, Westchester County, New York, leaving him a widower. Joseph married 2nd Abigail Vail, daughter of Jeremiah Vail and Catharine (?), in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Abigail may have been Joseph's second wife. About 1685, the family resided in Rye, Westchester County, New York but returned later to Southold. Their son Joseph married Mary Hallock and son John married Sarah Vail. Joseph departed this life before 1696 in the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
