George Havens1
M, b. circa 1653, d. 25 February 1706
George was born circa 1653 in Jamestown, Newport County, Rhode Island.1 He was the son of William Havens and Dionise Allen. George married Eleanor Thurston, daughter of Edward Thurston and Elizabeth Mott, in 1674 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. In 1698, George purchased 1,000 acres of land on Shelter Island from Nathaniel Sylvester. This acreage covered almost all of the central part of the island.2 George departed this life on Thursday, 25 February 1706 in Shelter Island, New York.3 He was buried at New London, New London County, Connecticut, in the ancient cemetery of New London. The inscription on his tombstone reads: George Havens, who deceased Feb. 25, 1706 at 53 years.
