Henry Fowler III1,2

M, b. 1632, d. before 31 December 1687
Henry was born in 1632 in Hambleton, County Rutland, England.3 He was the son of Henry Fowler II. In 1653, Henry & his friend, Joshua Foote immigrated to America from London. In January 1654, Henry purchased two properties in Providence. One of 60 acres from Joshua Winsor and one of 58 acres of Valentine Whitman. Henry was a blacksmith and was in business with Joshua Foote making hardware. Henry married Rebecca Newell, daughter of Abraham Newell and Frances (?), in the evening of 4 June 1655 at the home of Joshua Foote, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island. They were married without a license. On 4 June 1655, Henry was "warned of court to answer for his marriage without due publishment." His explanation of his in ability to obtain a license was on account of "ye division of ye towne" in regard to some of the town business, won for him a remission. He & the town were reputed by Roger Williams.4,5 It appears that he was apprenticed to Joshua Foote, an ironmonger He settled first in Roxbury with the Footes. Records in Roxbury show that Joshua Foote resided next to the Abraham Newell family. He later moved to Providence, Rhode Island early in 1655 with the Foote family. He was in Fairfield, Connecticut in 1665. In 1666, he is found in Eastchester, Westchester County, New York where he stayed until 1672. Then, he returned to Rhode Island and later, he moved to Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York. He was quite active in the community buying and selling land and appears to have been well able to finance business ventures. He also took an active part in the affairs of the community. By trade he was a blacksmith or as seen in one record "iron monger".6,7,8,9,10,11 In 1675 in two separate divisions in Providence, Henry was granted two parcels, one of 73 acres, the other 37 acres. Henry made his will on 19 September 1687 at Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York. On 19 September 1687, Henry transferred his house and home lot in Mamaroneck to his son, William, who was living in Flushing. He then moved to Eastchester where he remained until his death.12 Henry departed this life before 31 December 1687 in Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York. The inventory of Henry's estate was taken on Wednesday, 31 December 1687 at Mamaroneck, Westchester County, New York.13 His will was probated on 6 December 1704.14

Important Notes: Upon further research, we are finding there is no way to connect this Henry Fowler, husband of Rebeca Newell, with the English ancestry. That is Richard Fowler, son of Richard Fowler and Jane Danvers, and his wife Elizabeth Windsor, daughter of Thomas Windsor and Elizabeth Andrews [these families all being very prominent in English ancestry]. The information that we found in the Christine Fowler and the Wharton Dickinson book [many many years ago, before the internet] took this Henry [the immigrant] back into England by way of Henry Fowler of Hambleton, Rutland County to Henry Fowler born circa 1560 Hambleton and Annis Knight; to Thomas Fowler and Sarah Kevington; to Anthony Fowler and an unknown wife; stating that Anthony had moved from Rycote Manor, Oxfordshire, to Hambleton, Rutland County, and that this Antony born 1502-04 was the son of Richard Fowler and Elizabeth Windsor. In the will of Elizabeth’s father, Thomas Windsor dated 1479, he notes that she is already married to a Fowler, which means that her children would be born in the 1480’s or shortly before. We find no documentation that shows any sign of this lineage between Richard and Elizabeth [Windsor] Fowler and Henry Fowler the immigrant. It seems to appear that these connections were construed to relate to some prominent families in England. It is well known that back in the late 1800’s, prominent researchers made up connections, so that people would be related to prominent families in England, to the point of fabricating will and other documents - KLM.

He married Rebecca, daughter of Abraham Newell of Roxbury, Mass., who probably accompanied the Foote family to Providence, as she was married in the Foote home.
