Marie Coignard

     Marie was born circa 1643 in Rouen, Normandy, France, at the parish of St-Sauveur. She was the daughter of Francois Coignard & Francoise Petit.¹ On 15 May 1669, Marie left her home in France aboard the ship, "St-Jean-Baptiste", under the command of Captain Pierre Fillye, as one of 149 young ladies who were "Filles de Roi". These young ladies boarded the ship at either Dieppe or La Rochelle & were under the care of Madame Bourdon. They arrived at Quebec on the 30th of June. She brought with her goods estimated at 450 livres for her dowry, 50 livres of which came from the king..^2,3 A contract for the marriage of Robert Germain & Marie Coignard was signed on 14 October 1669. It was drawn up by notary, Mr Duquet.² Marie married Robert Germain, son of Julien Germain, on 29 October 1669 in Riviere-Ouelle, Kamouraska County, Quebec, Canada, at the church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse.⁴ 1681, Marie and her husband, Robert, were listed on the Canadian Census in Neuville, Portneuf County, Quebec, Canada. Enumerated in this household were Robert Germaine [42 years], Marie Cognac [38 years], Marie [10 years], Jean [8 years], Henri [7 years], Anne [5 years], Antoine [3 years] & Robert [2 years].⁵ Marie departed this life on Wednesday, 22 May 1715 in ville de Quebec, Quebec, Canada, at Hotel-Dieu.^2,3
