Gilbert fitz Richard de was born in 1065 in Normandy, France. He was the son of Richard fitz Gilbert and Rohese Giffard. Gilbert married Adelize de Creil de Clermont, daughter of Hugh de Creil, Count of Clermont and Margaret de Rouci, circa 1085 in England. 5403. Gilbert received his father's titles and land holdings in England as his inheritence. This inheritence made Gilbert one of the wealthiest magnates in the early part of the 12th century and at the young age of 25 years. Gilbert was in attendence when William Rufus had his "accident" and was killed by an arrow of his brother-in-law, William Tirel. Gilbert was rewarded for the family's resistance to William Rufus, with lands and the Lordship of Cardigan and the castle there from Henry I. Gilbert rebuilt the castle as the original had been destroyed and handed this castle down to his son Gilbert, the 1st Earl of Pembroke. Gilbert departed this life in 1115 in England.
