Daniel was born on Friday, 19 February 1745 in Orange County, New York. He was the son of Josiah Vail and Patience Corwin. Daniel married Elizabeth Smith on 3 January 1764 in Goshen, Orange County, New York. Daniel and Elizabeth had children: Dorothy [1/07/1765-12/26/1825] [m. James Armstrong & 2nd. Thomas Ferrell], Elizabeth [12/26/1767] [m. James Chandler], Daniel [3/10/1771-8/13/1844] [m. 1795 Sarah Bacon], Patience [9/30/1773] [m. Isaac Chandler], Jeremiah [8/01/1776] [m. Sally Johnson], Phebe [8/01/1778] [m. Elisha Strong] & Miriam [8/09/1781-] [m. 10/18/1798 Elijah Lindsey].2 He was a weaver. The 1800 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Camillus, Onondaga County, New York, the family of Daniel Vail [00001:00001].3 The 1810 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York, the family of Daniel Vail [21011:21011].4 Daniel's wife, Elizabeth, died on 12 March 1815 in Elbridge, Onondaga County, New York, leaving him a widower. The 1820 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York, the family of Daniel Vail [000202:010201].5 The 1830 U.S. Federal Census enumerates at Skaneateles, Onondaga County, New York, the family of Daniel Vail Jr. [00001101001:10102001]6 Daniel departed this life on Thursday, 23 February 1832 in Elbridge at age 87 years and 4 days. He was buried there in Elbridge Rural Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Daniel Vail - Died Feb. 23rd. 1832 - Agd 87 years & 4 days.7

Daniel Vail moved from Orange County to New Jersey, where he lived six years; thence he went to Camillus, Onondaga Co., N. Y., in 1792. From Camillus he went to Marcellus, N. Y., now Skaneateles. He was a weaver by trade. His wife died March 12, 1815. He died February 23, 1832, aged S7. Children: DOROTHY, b. 7 Jan., 1765; m. 1st James Armstrong; m. 2d Thomas Ferall.
