Joseph Baldwin1

M, b. before 29 November 1685, d. 20 September 1776
     Joseph was born in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut. He was christened there on 29 November 1685. He was the son of Jonathan Baldwin and Hannah Ward. Joseph married Elizabeth Esther Bruen on 12 June 1700 in Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Joseph and Elizabeth had children: Caleb [1705-1758], Moses [1708-1794] [m. Abgail Beach], Joshua [1710-5/07/1767] [m. 1734 Prudence Lyon], Hannah [1716-11/15/1800] [m. Samuel Johnson], Sarah [1719-5/05/1794] [m. Samuel Ball], Amos [1721-2/23/1805] [m. Mary Taylor], Rebekah [1723-5/11/1791] [m. Daniel Matthews and 2nd. John Campbell] & Phineas [1726-3/06/1803] [m. Hannah].2 Joseph's wife, Elizabeth, died on 29 September 1746 in Newark leaving him a widower. Joseph departed this life on Friday, 20 September 1776 in Newark, Sussex County, New Jersey. He was buried there in the Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads: Here lies the body of Joseph Baldwin he departed this life Sept 20 1776. His body was removed from this cemetery on December 12, 1844 and reburied in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark.
