Ezra Baldwin1

Ezra was born on Wednesday, 1 December 1706 in Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.2 He was the son of Jonathan Baldwin and Thankful Strong. He was christened there on 3 December 1706 in the first Church of Milford.3 Ezra married Ruth Curtis, daughter of James Curtis and Hannah Coe, on 2 December 1728 in Milford.4 Ezra was a Deacon in Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut as well as a farmer & blacksmith. In October 1730, he was one of the original subscribers of the Book Company of Durlfam, supposed by Prof. Fowler to be the first town library in the Colony. He built his own house, even making the nails himself.5,6 Ezra's wife, Ruth, died on 2 November 1772 in Durham leaving him a widower. Ezra departed this life on Tuesday, 26 March 1782 in Durham at age 75 years, 3 months and 25 days.7 He was buried there in the Old Durham Cemetery. His tomstone is inscribed with: "leaving with much usefulness in life, faithfully served his own generation according to the will of God, fell asleep March 26, 1782 in the 76th year of his life . . ."
